Leo has definitely always been my favourite. Especially in the east side kids and bowery boys. He made a career out of portraying the streetwise punk who always had the funniest lines and tough attitude.

I agree. Leo's characters had a certain attitude that just drew you to like them.

He definitely had the attitude and he was tough, but more than once he turned out to be the squealer, ratting out one of his gang just to save himself.

Yeah, the squealer aspects was a turn off for me...he was tough but not very loyal which in turn could show as a weakness. But he wouldn't be the first human being to save their own ass in a pinch, Lol. Definitely could see the potential that led to the "leader" debacle between Halop & Gorcey. ;D

Yeah, Leo was a bit of a squealer. But I think that's what I like about him. He always played the tough, cool-looking guy who was just really the weak one who prolly couldn't stand his own without the other guys. I think when Billy was not there, he'd be a good leader but otherwise, Billy was the supreme leader.

In the original Dead End Kids, Billy Halop was the leader but his leadership was always questioned & challenged by Leo Gorcey. Halop would always have to exercise & re-assert his leadership on Leo Gorcey who wanted to take over every chance he could get. Gorcey was the least loyal member & was out for himself & wanted to go his own way. Even James Cagney had to scare him & put Gorcey in his place. Gorcey's charismatic screen personality is quite memorable indeed.

Agreed. It was his personality that appealed people to him.
