I think I like the East Side Kids better then the Bowery Boys. I liked the combination of Bobby Jordan, Leo Gorcey, and Huntz Hall. Bobby's character was always the smart one and the voice of reason I guess you could say, always keeping Leo out of trouble. Leo of course was the tough guy as always and Huntz was the comic relief. I think that's what was missing in the Bowery Boys. You only had Gorcey and Hall as the main characters and usually three other members of their gang. The other members were pretty much treated as background. It's too bad that they weren't as much a part of the action as Gorcey and Hall were. The Bowery Boys might have been a lot better if it focused on the entire gang. Bobby Jordan was a part of the Bowery Boys, but only for a few episodes. He wasn't as involved as he was in The East Side Kids and decided to leave.

I agree. Although I really did like the Bowery Boys. It was a good series, funny overall. But-- East Side Kids were better. It was the group dynamic and the stories.... it was just better!

After I first saw Dead End in the late '70s on TV, I was immediately drawn into watching most of the East Side Kids films every saturday afternoon & I was hooked on them. I just couldn't get enough of them. I liked Leo Gorcey as the tough leader, Huntz Hall as the comic & Bobby Jordan as the smart one & voice of reason. Gabriel Dell was also in the series but sometimes he wasn't "one of the boys" instead he was a rival & adversary to the East Side Kids. I remember it used to disappoint me seeing Gabriel Dell as the heavy. I never got past the East Side Kids so I can't really comment on The Bowery Boys. I've never seen any of those films. Didn't they become comedians by this period ?

Yes. They were mostly comedic with Leo Gorcey and Huntz Hall as the leads. I love watching the episodes but personally, (aside from the dead end kids movies) I think the East Side Kids are better. You should give them a watch. I know they are played in the morning on the Turner Classic Movie channel.

I'm really glad I stumbled onto this site, as a result I just watched 2 of the East Side Kids films on "Internet Archive" "Smart Alecks" & one I've never seen before called " That Gang Of Mine" another early entry that did not include Huntz Hall. It was very real & dramatic with some comedy thrown in for relief & it was just Gorcey & Bobby Jordan. For the first time I also saw a trailer for a "Bowery Boys" movie "Jungle Gents" & it's just straight comedy, Gorcey had filled out a little by this time making funny faces & I can tell it's a departure from all their earlier series. I was searching for a "Bowery" film on the "Archive" & I came out empty handed.
I'm also hooked on the East Side Kids films again after all these years. I just love those guys more than ever.

Thanks! I'm glad you like the site! ;D
Oh yeah, I've seen "That Gang Of MIne". It was pretty good. Although when Huntz isn't there for the comedic side, it feels like something's missing. Yeah, by the Bowery Boys, Leo just acted straight on funny. It wasn't bad but I do like him as the tough guy more. I still think the East Side Kids are the best-- they were just great!!!!
