I think this movie was a good one. I remember reading in a book about the Dead End Kids that this movie wasn't as good as the others because in this movie they weren't portrayed as rough and tough street kids like their other movies, just because in this film they actually went to school and fought for a certain cause. I think they had their 'tough street kids" moments in this film. Just because they started out as tough street kids in their earlier movies, it doesn't mean they had to stay that way through out every movie they made. Sometimes a little change is good!

Definitely! I don't get how everyone (in books) were saying that it wasn't good because they were respectable boys. I actually did like seeing them in school and fighting for something other than being a gangster or trying to get out of reform school, etc. Even though they were in school and they weren't hoodlums per se, I think they weren't any less tough than they were in the other films. They still had the same edge and toughness and it still made them appealing and cool. Great movie!!!!

I agree, by 1939 we were at the brink of war even though the US didn't get involved til 1942. It was a time of moral boosting & patriotism & fighting for causes. Gangster movies were drawing to a close. 1939 also saw the Dead End Kids in They Made Me A Criminal & they were tough but they were also showing signs of improvement & reform. Living on a country farm with Grandma was good for them. I hope I get to see the D.E.Kids wash their faces someday.

They sometimes show it on the Turner Classics Movie Channel. I caught it there once. You could probably download it to from the internet.

Yeah that's true. I downloaded it from the internet so I could make a DVD out of it I think. The torrent site www.isohunt.com is usually good.
